After a disappointing second place finish in last year’s indoor state championships, Salesianum looked to rebound this season. Winning has become a tradition for the runners at Salesianum, and second place is not what they were looking for this year. The indoor track season gave the team a great place to redeem itself. Luckily for the team, a lot of athletes from last year made their return this season, with many of them having scored in states last year.

The 2017-2018 season started off well for the team. Many of the veterans were in great form, and plenty of Underclassmen were performing well in their events. The distance team who usually carries the load, was looking phenomenal. The team was lead by Michael Keehan along with Sean Banko, Austin Barry, and Lucien Peach.

This season, the team had more contributions from the sprinters, jumpers, and throwers than previous years. The sprints and jumps team had many great athletes and among them were the Klous twins, Charles and Patrick. The twins compete in many events, not limiting themselves to just sprints or just jumps. Along with the Klous twins are Brett Henshey and Blaise Hylak. Brett started high jumping last year and has already proven himself as one of the top in the state. Blaise is one of the best sprinters on the team and excels in the 400. The throwers are captained by John Cohill and James Woods. Although James focuses on discus, he had a strong indoor shot put season.

Going into states this year, we were ranked number one as a team. Last year, we were awarded this same spot, but it did not mean anything with a disappointing finish. We knew going into states that to win we did not need anything spectacular, we just needed to do our jobs. And we did just that. We did not need to depend on distance as much this season because we got plenty of points in the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and 4x800m. Keehan was the leading scorer for our team in this discipline scoring in all three of his events. The field events are what really helped our team this year. The Klous twins tied for first place in the pole vault, Brett Henshey and Patrick Klous came in 1st and 2nd, and John Cohill and myself did the same in shot put. We earned a few points from the sprints finishing the day with 92 points narrowly beating Dover with 85 points.

The team would not have won without our coaches. Coach Gioffre at head coach, Coach Lee in charge of sprints and jumps, Coach Bryne managing the throwers, and Coach Mazzio leading the distance team. The season was great overall and we look forward to competing in the outdoor season and hopefully winning another state championship.
