How Disney+ Plans to Make TV The “Happiest Place On Earth”
October 21, 2019
Disney has decided to throw its massive Mickey-shaped hat into another arena of the entertainment industry – and Netflix may soon be hurting.
Next month, Disney+ will launch as Disney’s proprietary streaming service. The platform will combine all of Disney’s biggest IPs into one massive digital catalog. Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic will all be represented, and fans will be able to enjoy all of them anywhere on almost any device.
As for the selection, Disney recently revealed a large portion of their launch lineup. Highlights include Snow White, Fantasia, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, The Jungle Book, The Muppet Movie, The Little Mermaid, The Sandlot, The Santa Clause, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., every Star Wars film, The Incredibles, High School Musical, National Treasure, Iron Man, The Clone Wars Animated Series, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Frozen, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Inside Out, all 30 seasons of The Simpsons, Zootopia, Captain Marvel, and many more. So far, Disney has confirmed that over 600 unique offerings will be available on November 12, all ready to be seen on the extensive Disney+ Twitter thread.
Besides established shows and movies, Disney+ will be the exclusive home for new original content. Disney has announced a multitude of projects from all of its largest franchises. Marvel Studios plans to continue the stories of the MCU through new shows starring Falcon, The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Witch, Vision, and more. Furthermore, they are introducing new heroes in shows based on She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and others. Pixar plans to bring a new Monsters Inc. series, and Disney itself has announced a many new originals, like Noelle (a Christmas movie) and a Lady and the Tramp remake.
While not too much of this exclusive content will be available at launch, a highlight for many on November 12 will surely be Jon Favreau’s new live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. This highly anticipated show will follow the adventures of a new bounty hunter between the events of Episode VI and Episode VII.
In addition to its high-quality content selection, Disney+ itself will have many of the same features that fans of other streaming services have come to expect. Its UI looks clean and incredibly friendly, and users will be able to access unlimited offline downloads of everything the platform has to offer.
In the months after its launch, Disney plans to update its digital library. The company has promised that missing Marvel films, Star Wars stories, and Disney classics will eventually be made available – and that’s bad news for Netflix. After Disney’s prior Netflix agreement expires, all of Disney’s content on the platform will then migrate over to Disney+. While this won’t account for everything, it will represent a large selection of more recent releases. Even though some fan-favorite films will not be available on Disney+ Day 1, it’s likely just a matter of time.
Disney+ will launch on November 12 in the US for $69.99 per year.
