With the theater season ramping up at Salesianum, the musical Sweeney Todd calls upon musicians from Salesianum, Ursuline, Padua, and the Music School of Delaware to craft the soundtrack for the show. The musical is about a barber who is wrongfully imprisoned. When he returns, he vows to get revenge on the man who exiled him. He partners up with the owner of a pie shop and turns to murder for revenge, disposing of his victims as a barber into the shop’s pies. This musical’s instrumental ensemble features various instruments from violins to trumpets. With opening night in early March, director Brian Cox seems to have ample time to prepare the orchestra.
One musician stated that this show was “a delight to be a part of” and that they were looking forward to the coming months when rehearsals are expected to increase in frequency. In addition, key musicians of the Pit Orchestra are absent as of writing this—such as a pianist. The piano/keyboard part in any musical plays a crucial role in the soundtrack, as it carries a lot of the central harmony and rhythm the other instruments build upon. It is also a very versatile part when played on an electronic keyboard, as it creates some effects that add to the ambiance and soundtrack. The piano/keyboard part is also a very difficult role to fulfill, as it requires extensive musical capabilities. Director Brian Cox is looking for skilled Salesianum alumni to take the role, although current students with extensive piano experience are more than welcome. Smaller instrument roles, such as various string parts, are also missing; however, these are expected to be filled before rehearsals pick up.
As rehearsals continue, they are expected to increase in frequency. Rehearsals have started on Wednesdays from roughly 3:00-5:00 but will increase and usually add a day or so of rehearsal per week every month leading up to the opening night. Turnout for this musical is expected to be larger than normal, with this being a knowledgeable and favorite musical amongst many. Salesianum is implementing new strategies to garner support for the theater program.
Many program members are thrilled about this upcoming show, as it is the most extensive one this year. The four showings of “Sweeney Todd” will be in early March, with tickets being available in the daily announcements soon.
