Statements like this have been said since the beginning of the year. Pick up your trash and any trash you might see, hold everyone accountable and try to keep the school clean. But every so often there are messes that don’t get cleaned up and even after the individual or groups have been stopped a new mess appears. Especially in the Gym, Centenary hall, and the lunch room. We should all feel comfortable enough to pick up trash and stop others when they do, friends or not. We have the privilege of a great flex/lunch period; and we should be grateful for that and try to help out not just for the fear of getting caught by the camera. Rather for those who come after you, shadows, your current brothers and sisters, visitors, and the alumni who came before us who did the same for us.
As Salesianum students we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard and have integrity doing things even when no one is watching. “When you leave something behind you are only making someone else’s day/job harder.” And in saying all this I asked Mr. Stepek, and other adults in the building to let us know how we can do better.
“All these good things, right? And people take a lot of pride in, in just wearing the Salesianum name across their chest. Um, but with that right, comes doing the little things each day, the right, the right way, right? And, um, this, this building, right, um, represents a lot, right? A lot of hard work, a lot of dedication, um, a lot of sacrifice and, and service and, um, in a lot of different ways. And, and the way in which we can honor, right? The people that came before us, and the people that are to come, right? That, to uphold those standards is to keep the place clean, right? Like, um, the facilities crew, and I’ve said this multiple times, um, in multiple different ways. Our facilities crew does a great job in keeping the place looking nice, right? Um, but that’s not their job, right? To, to pick up trash. So, um, honestly, I think it’s, it comes down to ownership. Um, owning owning what, what is in front of you. Um, you know, uh, what, what you can control, um, control the controllables. And, um, it, it’s, it’s as simple as being, being a leader, right? Like, um, I will say today, uh, December 19th, right? Uh, you guys had your, your break in between finals and, um, hopped on the mic and I just said, leave this place spotless. And everyone pitched in, everyone helped. It’s the best. It’s looked almost all year.”
To conclude we as students should try to keep the school clean and I think the best way to do that is to do it consistently. And from the information I have gathered from teachers and other students a club is the best answer one where we think about how to do the little things well. “One rarely does well what one rarely does.” – St. Francis De Sales
