I had a very early and gentle introduction to the Salesian Brotherhood as an eighth grader at Holy Cross School in Dover. This was when I was still considering Salesianum. Mr. Haley, best known around campus for his coaching and teaching, accommodated my mathematical inclination, with me present among others in his honors geometry class. I was welcome. I was welcomed into his class without difficulty or ostracism, a member of Salesianum, a member of A205, even from afar. With the highest degree of gratitude, I am glad for this consideration. Nowadays, I find it funny how I can hear Mr. Haley’s voice across the hallway from me now in A208, simply reminiscent of my unique opportunity to be part of his honors geometry class while in my eighth-grade year, for I was once there, present among Salesianum just a year ago! It is a fascinating perspective. Mr. Haley transitioned me mathematically and developmentally to become a member of Salesianum High School, with his class as a significant investment.
Two other phenomenal mathematics teachers, Mrs. Schuster, and Mr. Kegelman, also aided my transition. I also thank Mr. Haley for his kindness. During every class, I knew I was welcomed; whether we were testing or proving triangles similar, I knew. Inclusivity is craved by many students, in general. When I attended Mr. Haley’s geometry class, my love for math and appreciation for Salesianum grew exponentially. I was a brother. I was a student. I was at Salesianum School, yes. Mr. Haley brought the Brotherhood to me in that Zoom app, from teacher to student. The Brotherhood is not a marketing concept; it is we. Whether it be the Cross Country team, DECA, or class in A208, all are part of the Brotherhood.
Salesianum is an investment in mind, body, and spirit, so be a brother; make a Salesian difference. Do it on behalf of you, your peers, freshmen seniors, faculty, and teachers. Please do it for the guys looking to become the Brotherhood, from near or far, to be included. Brotherhood goes beyond the tangible walls and doors, evident as I was welcomed into its embrace before I was an official Salesianum student; the Brotherhood is we, and Salesianum is brotherhood.
