The Fred Rust Ice Arena didn’t get much of a game, as Salesianum dominated their opponent in their latest out-of-state scheduled game.
Sals skated into a massive win on Monday night, winning the game against Maryland powerhouse Calvert Hall, in a 10-2 victory. Junior goalie Gavin Needs stopped 26 shots, while senior Jack Igo scored a goal with an assist from junior Justin Celentino.
The other lines were on fire, including Nick LaBuono with a hat trick also including Braeden Graham and Conner Davis would also put up points in this dominating win.
Calvert Hall boasted one of the strongest lineups in Maryland during the 2023 season, including two junior defensemen committed to playing college hockey. Their first-period defense crumbled fast as the Sal’s offensive attack was simply too much to handle. Calvert Hall’s goalkeeper could not get in a rhythm, and before the period was over, Salesianum already had a multi-goal lead.
Salesianum Head Hockey Coach Brian LeBlanc gave all of the credit to the guys on the ice for their hard work and dedication. “They really took care of business tonight, ” said the defending FLyers cup head coach, “they have been consistent all year and are truly dedicated to this team being elite. Hat’s off to them, but the job is not yet finished.”
After the final buzzer, the Sals jumped off the bench and stormed goalie Gavin Needs, congratulating each other on a wonderful performance. They huddled up at center ice and did a team prayer, and after that the Sals celebrated in the locker room with loud music and cheering.
A team MVP of the night was awarded to goalkeeper Gavin Needs for his fine performance.
“It’s an honor to have this award,” said Needs, a junior from Wilmington, “I would like to thank my teammates and coaches who have helped me along the way and seeing an awesome game by the Sals.”
This massive win by the Sals puts their overall record for the season at 9-3 as they head into the heart of their schedule with big games upcoming against Pennsylvania power La Salle College High School, St. Joe’s Prep, Malvern Prep, and Holy Ghost Prep. Salesianum will need to bring the same type of energy and intensity against these teams if they wish to repeat as Flyers Cup Champions.
