The Salesianum tennis team has been patient in waiting for their new, long awaited, tennis courts. Since the start of construction on the new Fusco Fields and the demolition of the courts, the team has been calling Delcastle tennis center home, having shared the courts with Wilmington University’s women’s tennis team in the spring of 2024. The approval for the construction of the courts took longer than expected to process, but was finalized in August, allowing MidAtlantic sports to begin their construction. The plan is to construct the courts in two sets of three, and currently they’re in the middle of development and are taking shape behind the parking lots of Abessinio stadium. Each court will be surfaced with a high quality acrylic coating that will be an eye-catching shade of Sallies blue. The courts will be surrounded with both high and low fences to allow easy viewing of matches, with water fountains and picnic tables adjacent. Although exciting, the courts won’t be finished until late May. The main concern is the court material, which needs a temperature range of 50 degrees or higher for 2 weeks to properly set.
After the team’s strong 2024 season, with second doubles Vincent and Jonathan reaching semi-finals in the state tournament, the team is eager for spring to come around. When asked about the courts, athletic director Ms. Godfrey says “We are very excited about the construction of the new Kelly Tennis Courts being put in at the Abessinio Stadium complex. MidAtlantic Sports Construction is the same company that we used for Fusco Fields and they have been an amazing partner throughout this process.” Consider taking a walk over to the stadium and checking out the future home of our Tennis team.
