As the season of thanks approaches, so does the season of giving as the annual Kenney house turkey drive commences. The Kenney turkey drive is an event run by the prefects of Kenney in which students can hand in any turkey or other poultry to go to families who don’t have the luxury of warm food every Thanksgiving like we do.
The turkeys are given to Saint Anthony of Padua Church, Sunday Breakfast Mission, and Terry’s Children Center. These places are known for their charitable deeds around this time of year, which is reflected through Salesianum’s annual drive. House prefect Chris Pastro says, “We have worked with these places in the past, but they are also places we know that will really help out struggling families within the community.” This rapport between Salesianum and these foundations continues to grow year after year.
Pastro and the other perfects look to expand the leniency of the drive by accepting more than just turkeys. This makes it much easier for more and more people to donate to this cause, as the goal is to help as many families as possible to strengthen the community.
In past years, the drive has gotten over 200 donations in a matter of one or two days, an astounding achievement. With more students and the cooperation of many different people this year, the bar is set higher than ever.” Pastro adds, “There’s not really a set number we have in mind, but we’re looking for as much as possible. We just want to help out as many families as possible.”
With the help of both teachers and students combined, the Kenney prefects want to reach people who truly need it.
